ZQUOTES HELP
A little help.
Start reading, make a collection your own, and keep a thought within reach.
Read and discover
Open zQuotes to a quote from the collection. Swipe left for the next quote or right to revisit your reading history. You can also use the arrow buttons. On Mac, the left and right arrow keys navigate too.
The shuffled collection visits every quote before starting another cycle. Choose System, Light, or Dark appearance in Settings.
Save and find a favorite
Tap the heart to save the current quote. Open the collection button to find saved quotes or search the collection by quote text or author.
Add your own quotes
Open the collection button and choose the option to add a quote. Enter the quote text and author, then save. Your personal quotes stay on the device where you add them.
Import a collection
Choose the import option from the collection, then select a local UTF-8 JSON file in the system file picker. Files must be no larger than 10 MB. Use an array with a text and author for each entry. An optional source can describe its origin.
[
{
"text": "Leave a little room for a new idea today.",
"author": "Your name",
"source": "My personal notebook"
}
]zQuotes validates the full batch before saving and skips duplicate quote text. Keep text within 10,000 characters, author names within 500, and source descriptions within 2,000. The total saved personal collection must also fit within 10 MB.
If an import fails, check the JSON syntax, required fields, and file size. Select a local JSON file; if it is stored with a cloud file provider, download it to your device first.
Put a quote on your screen
iPhone and iPad Home Screen
Touch and hold an empty area on the Home Screen, open the widget gallery using the add-widget control, then search for zQuotes. Choose a small or medium widget and add it.
iPhone Lock Screen
Touch and hold your Lock Screen, choose Customize, and select the Lock Screen. Tap a widget area, then choose zQuotes. Available layouts depend on the widget area. Lock Screen widgets show short, complete quotes; if the space is too small, a quote symbol opens the reader.
Mac desktop and Notification Center
Control-click the desktop and choose Edit Widgets, or open Notification Center and choose Edit Widgets. Search for zQuotes, choose a small or medium widget, and add it.
Widget behavior
Widgets use the bundled quote collection. Personal and imported quotes, favorites, and saved-only filtering are not shared with the widgets. Tap a widget to open the quote it displays in the app.
Apple controls widget refresh timing. Updates are best effort and can be delayed by system conditions, power settings, or the widget budget. A precise rotation interval is not guaranteed. If a widget appears stuck or blank, open zQuotes once and try removing and adding the widget again.
Your collection stays local
Favorites, personal quotes, and settings are stored on the current device. There is no iCloud sync between the iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps. An import on one device does not import that collection on another.
There is no built-in export feature. Keep a separate copy of your original import file. Deleting the app may erase your saved quotes, favorites, and settings. Device backups and restoration depend on your Apple system settings.
Accessibility and compatibility
On iPhone and iPad, zQuotes follows your system text size. On all supported platforms, it supports VoiceOver actions, Reduce Motion, and light and dark appearances. Longer quotes can scroll. The app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, or macOS 15 or later.
